Description

The Muhlenberg Branch of NYPL is on 23rd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. Like the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, the Muhlenberg Branch was designed by Carrere & Hastings, and was opened in 1906. Unlike the Beaux Arts design of the 42nd Street Library, the Muhlenberg Branch design has been called neo-Renaissance.

This library was one of the 65 that was built with money provided by Andrew Carnegie. Chelsea's Church of the Holy Communion has the branch named after its first rector, William Augustus Muhlenberg,

Major renovations in 1999 by R.M. Kliment & Frances Halsband sought to restore and preserve the original 1906 building while updating services for the 21st century.
