Description

Nine photographs.

The first five photographs deal with the bust of Athena that is in the center of the lobby as one enters Low Library. Athena appears as Parthenos ("the Virgin"). Ancient libraries were known to have large busts or statuary to the emperor or Athena, or maybe both. There are two other busts on either side of the entrance inside the library, one of Apollo, the other of Zeus. The first photograph is just as one enters Low and faces Athena. The second is the bust in front of the area under the dome. The third and fourth photographs are close-ups of the bust. The fifth photograph is a detail of the laurel wreath on the floor around the base of the statue.

The sixth and seventh photographs are of the Apollo bust.

The eight and ninth photographs are of the Zeus bust, upon the pedestal is inscribed the name of the god and "Phidias" and "Olympia;" this bust is supposedly a copy of the head of the colossal statue that Phidias made for the Temple of Zeus at Olympia.
