Description

Though housed in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, this statue of Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus may have stood in the apse of his library in Ephesus.

It was not uncommon for Roman libraries to have statuary to the gods or benefactors. In this case, Celsus is the honoree, the library having been built by his son, Gaius Julius Aquila, as both a tribute to his father and as his tomb. (The apse is over the tomb.)

Being of Greek descent, Celsus was a Roman senator and governor of Asia. His son Aquila held the rank of consul.

The statue is missing its right arm, which was probably upraised in salute or greeting.
