Description

Three photographs. Each photograph shows one of the inscriptions on the attic of the monumental arch entrance into NYPL. These three organizations joined together to create NYPL in 1897.

The first photograph is of the left inscription: "The Astor Library, founded by John Jacob Astor for the advancement of useful knowledge, MDCCCXLVIII [i.e. 1848]."

The second photograph is of the middle inscription: "The Lenox Library, founded by James Lenox, dedicated to history, literature, and the fine arts, MDCCCLXX [i.e. 1870]."

The third photograph is of the left inscription: "The Tilden Trust, founded by Samuel Jones Tilden, to serve the interests of science and popular education, MDCCCLXXV[i.e. 1875]."
