Description

The Humanities and Social Sciences Library is the main library of the New York Public Library. NYPL was founded in 1895 by the merging the Astor and Lenox libraries and the Tilden Trust. The main library was built 1902-1911 in the Beaux-Arts design that was very popular at the time.

An in-depth history can be found on the library's web site: http://www.nypl.org/about/locations/schwarzman

NOTE: though the name of the century-old building was officially changed after Library Trustee Stephen A. Schwarzman donated $100 million to a library fundraising campaign, New Yorkers still refer to it as the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, or the 42nd Street Library.
