Description

Seven photographs.

The first three photographs are of the innermost doors. These doors are made of wood, with one central, diamond-shaped window in each.

The next four photographs are of the Bronze Door. This door is between the innermost doors and the modern, external door. It weighs 1,000 pounds and cost $30,000 and was acquired by the Warners for the library. Mr. Warner, an expert in engineering skills (he made astronomical telescopes), designed a hinge by which the door can swing back and forth with the push of a finger.

The Bronze Door is decorated with the motif, "The Coronation of Venice," a late 19th century bronze sculpture. It depicts Neptune crowning the personified Venice as Queen of the Adriatic. Venice is sometimes identified with Venus, so Venice appears as Venus with her cherubs and court, awaiting Neptune's arrival with the crown.
