Library of Celsus
Like most ancient libraries, the Library of Celsus had a statue of the honoree, in this case Tiberius Julius Celsus Polmaeanus, for whom the library is named. It was not unusual for a donor statue to be erected in the library; in this case, the honoree of the library had a statue erected over his tomb, which was accessible by staircase from between the library walls.
The Library of Celsus also had statuary on the facade which further decorated the building. These female statues represented the virtues that Celsus possessed. The statues are: Sophia Klesou (the Wisdom of Celsus) ...
... Arete Klesou (the Excellence of Celsus) ...
... and Episteme Klesou (the Knowledge of Celsus).
