Columns on the facade of the library

The portico and façade of the library has Ionic columns. There is a grand procession of columns inside, however. Astor Hall and the first floor of the library uses Doric columns. The hall is reportedly the largest free-standing, arched room in the world. The groin arches are evident in the two photographs. The second floor uses Ionic columns while the top floor uses Corinthian. This progression reflects the evolution of the Greek column, the earliest being Doric and the latest being Corinthian.

Columns are also used to decorate doorways.
